These terms are often used interchangeably, but they refer to different types of equipment:
Ceiling height is crucial for stair climber installation. Most rotating stair climbers (step mills) require a minimum of 10 feet (120 inches) ceiling clearance to safely accommodate the machine height plus the user standing on the steps. Compact steppers typically require less clearance, around 8-9 feet. Always check the manufacturer specifications and add your height plus a few inches for comfortable operation.
Steps per minute (SPM) measures the speed of your stair climbing workout. Most stair climbers offer a range from about 24-26 SPM (slow walking pace) up to 160-185 SPM (intense cardio). A typical moderate workout is around 60-80 SPM. Higher SPM ranges are important for interval training and advanced users who want to push their cardiovascular limits.
